Ayr enjoys more than 300 glorious sunny days each year, so come visit this winterless north! Located 85 klms south of Townsville, Ayr is on the northern approach to the Burdekin Bridge. This spectacular bridge is known as the “Silver Link”, and was the longest bridge in Australia for many years – it is the district’s best-known landmark.
This is truly a bird-watcher’s paradise, with around 280 species of birds recorded. The district is Australia’s richest sugar producing area, and is also the mango and melon capital. The lookouts of Mt Inkerman and Mt Kelly provide great vantage points to view the vast farmlands and wetlands of the Burdekin district. |
The area is a mecca for fishing, crabbing, windsurfing and water skiing. Visitors and locals enjoy the natural beauty of the rivers, creeks, estuaries lined with mangroves, and the miles of beautiful sandy beaches.
